Baptism Culture in the Philippines

Good day everyone. I am back to do another entry related to one of the most common practices here in the Philippines for infants especially. I am talking about the practice of doing BAPTISM. This is basically a part of our religious practices as Roman Catholic.  I'll just briefly explain what it means and the reasons why we practice this through the years.

What does BAPTISM mean?
  • It literally means a sense of belongingness. After a person is baptized, automatically the person becomes a new member of the Church.
  • Also, it basically means  identification. That is truly a personal and public identification with Christ.
  • Next, it also signifies we have accepted a new life from a life of sin and now,  a renewed life willing to follow God's examples.
  • Lastly, it also means that we join and become a member of the group of people who believe in God's living ministry.

The Godparents

Why do I need to be baptized?
Baptism is actually the start of a new life ( A LIFE FREE FROM ORIGINAL SIN) that is full of joy and new promise to be a better individual. With this comes a purpose. That means our purpose is to live God's teachings in our daily lives and preach this good news to others as well.

THINGS TO REMEMBER when PLANNING for this EVENT

1. Schedule the date of the baptism ahead of time with your Church
Yes, this is so important. That's the main reason why I put it on the number 1 list. It's  basically  because  planning  and  arranging  the scheduled  date is not  that easy because  it  all depends  on  the availability of the church. Mostly, having a weekend schedule is usually fully booked. Plan ahead and be stress-free as you wait for that said scheduled event.

2. Choosing the right Godparents
These people will serve as guides to your child so choose well. Make sure they can contribute good deeds and serve as living examples to your child as well.
** For godparents who are Catholics, usually their baptismal certificates are asked as one of the requirements.
** For non-Catholic godparents, they are called as witnesses somehow.
Regardless of the difference of religions, as long as the godparents live their life with faith, dignity and being a person for others, then that's all that matters.

3. Prepare the necessary things  that are needed ahead of time
a) Christening Gown
This is essential because it will be used during the ceremony itself and the baptism proper. This is usually white  that symbolizes purity. Since it's just worn pretty quickly, you may opt to borrow from a friend to cut down on the costs. You may also choose something NICE that can be used over and over again if desired. It's really up to your heart's desire.

b.) Candles
These will be prepared and should be brought during the said event. Godparents and others members will light and hold this during the baptismal rites. Make sure you have enough.

4. Prepare a small gathering to celebrate the said event after the ceremony
This kind of gathering is really up to you. Here are the following examples how each family does this.
  • Some families prefer to avail of catering services in a venue suited for small parties for the guests and family members.
  • Some have their gathering in a family restaurant.
  • Some also prefer to have a mini salu-salo ( get together) at home. They serve some sweets and desserts for everybody to enjoy.
*** The essence of this gathering is to welcome and celebrate this milestone of the new member of the Catholic Church.

Basically, that's it for now. Hope you find this helpful.
If you have some questions for me, then ask away.
Take care and always love life everyday.
